The Complete History of Dadi Amma Dargah and Its Relation to Mira Datar Dargah

The Dadi Amma Dargah, dedicated to Hazrat Saiyeda Daulat Bibi (R.A.), affectionately known as Dadi Amma, Dama Amma, or Dadi Maa, is a sacred memorial site intertwined with the legacy of the renowned Sufi saint Hazrat Saiyed Ali Mira Datar (R.A.). While her actual mazar (tomb) is located in Usmaanpura, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, her spiritual presence is profoundly felt at the Mira Datar Dargah in Unava (Unjha Sharif), through her Chilla Mubarak (place of spiritual retreat) and the iconic Dadi Amma Ki Chakki (flourmill). This chakki is a focal point for devotees seeking relief from evil spirits (jinn), black magic (kala jadu), possession, mental afflictions, and other woes, symbolizing her divine power to eradicate negativity.

Dadi Amma was the foster mother and wet nurse to Mira Datar, stepping in after the untimely death of his biological mother, Hazrat Saiyeda Aisha Bibi (R.A.), also known as Jannati Maa or Rasti Amma. Her life exemplifies selfless devotion, miraculous intervention, and maternal piety in the Sufi tradition. The two shrines—Mira Datar's grand dargah and Dadi Amma's memorial elements—are spiritually inseparable, forming a familial spiritual network that attracts millions from all faiths. Devotees believe that while physical tombs honor the saints, their ruh (soul) and barakah (blessings) converge at Unava, making it a powerhouse for healing.

This comprehensive history draws from Sufi hagiographies, family shijra (genealogies), devotee accounts, and shrine records. It explores her lineage, life, miracles, the establishment of her shrines, rituals, testimonials, and her integral role in the Mira Datar legacy. Though rooted in oral and written traditions, these narratives inspire faith, emphasizing tawhid (Allah's oneness) and tawassul (seeking nearness through righteous souls).

Family Lineage and Historical Context

Dadi Amma belonged to the illustrious Hussaini Sayyed family, descendants of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A.), grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and son of Hazrat Ali (R.A.), the "Sher-e-Khuda" (Lion of God). This lineage traces through Hazrat Imam Ali Naqi (R.A.), the 10th Imam, and aligns with the Soharwardia Silsila (Sufi order). The family migrated from Bukhara (modern Uzbekistan) to India in the 15th century to propagate Islam amid declining faith.

Key ancestors include:

  • Hazrat Saiyed Muhammad Daurain (R.A.): Migrated to a village near Lucknow with his son Hazrat Saiyed Ilmuddin (R.A.), Mira Datar's grandfather.

  • Hazrat Saiyed Ilmuddin (R.A.): Relocated to Ahmedabad during Sultan Ahmed Shah's reign (1411–1442 CE). Met his uncle Hazrat Kutb-e-Alam (R.A.), a Sufi saint, and became Commander-in-Chief (Sipesalar) in the sultan's army. He guided soldiers toward Sunnah, making many his mureeds (disciples).

  • Hazrat Saiyed Dost Muhammad (R.A.): Mira Datar's father, a valiant warrior and swordsman favored by the sultan. Married Hazrat Saiyeda Aisha Bibi (R.A.) (Jannati Maa/Rasti Amma), sister of Sabe Burhani (R.A.) and from a Sufi family of walis (saints).

Dadi Amma entered this family through marriage to Dost Muhammad after a divine miracle. She became Mira Datar's stepmother and primary caregiver, nurturing his spiritual growth. The family settled in Saiyedwada, Kanpur (near Ahmedabad), living by Quran and Hadith, emphasizing tawhid and humanitarian service.

This lineage produced martyrs and healers, defending Islam against rebellions while offering spiritual solace. Dadi Amma's role bridged maternal care and divine empowerment, as Prophet Muhammad gifted healing powers to Mira Datar's mother, grandmother (Dadi Amma), and uncle.

Birth and Early Life of Hazrat Saiyeda Daulat Bibi

Details of Dadi Amma's exact birth date and place are sparse in hagiographies, typical of Sufi narratives focusing on spiritual deeds over chronology. Born in the early 15th century, likely in Gujarat or a nearby region, she hailed from a pious Muslim family aligned with Sufi values. Her name, "Daulat Bibi," signifies "blessed lady," reflecting her destined role.

Before marriage, she was known for piety and devotion. Legends portray her as a compassionate woman drawn to the Hussaini family's spiritual aura. Her life transformed upon encountering the infant Mira Datar, whose cries for milk invoked her miraculous motherhood.

Life Story and Miracles of Dadi Amma

Dadi Amma's life centered on nurturing Mira Datar after Jannati Maa's death on Friday, 16 Rajab 880 Hijri (circa 1475 CE). Mira Datar, born on Sunday, August 4, 1426 CE (29 Ramadan 829 Hijri), was 10 months and 16 days old. The family grieved, but divine intervention shone through Dadi Amma.

The Milk Miracle

The most celebrated miracle occurred when baby Mira Datar wept inconsolably for milk. Dadi Amma (then Daulat Bibi), moved by compassion, embraced him and prayed: "O Allah Subhana Taala, if I had milk, I would feed this child." Her dua was accepted instantly—milk flowed from her breasts, astonishing witnesses. This karamat (miracle) confirmed Allah's favor, leading Dost Muhammad to marry her. She became his wet nurse and stepmother, feeding him with divine sustenance.

This event echoes Quranic stories of divine provision, like Maryam (A.S.) receiving fruits in seclusion. It solidified Dadi Amma's status as a waliya (female saint), her barakah tied to maternal love and faith.

Upbringing of Mira Datar

Dadi Amma raised Mira Datar with Dadi Maa (grandmother) and Dada Jaan (grandfather figure). She ensured his education in ibaadat (worship), Hadith, Sunnah, and Quran. Mira Datar grew pious, following Hazrat Ali's footsteps for humanity's well-being. Dadi Amma's influence instilled resilience, preparing him for martyrdom at 18 against Raja Mehandi's rebellion.

She supported the family's military-spiritual duties. Dost Muhammad fought decoits around Patangaon (near Unava, then Lilapure), building a home there. Dadi Amma's presence provided stability amid turmoil.

Divine Power Bestowed

Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) gifted Dadi Amma the "Power of Healing" to eradicate evil forces, shared with Jannati Maa and Mamu Saheb (Mira Datar's uncle). This boon extended the family's legacy of zinda karamat (living miracles), focusing on spiritual healing.

Dadi Amma lived piously until her demise (date unspecified, likely mid-15th century). Her life exemplified tawassul—seeking Allah's favor through righteous acts—without shirk.

Establishment and Significance of Dadi Amma Dargah

Dadi Amma's actual mazar was established in Usmaanpura, Ahmedabad, shortly after her passing, alongside Jannati Maa's. This site honors her earthly resting place, attracting local devotees for ziyarat (visitation) and duas.

However, her spiritual essence manifests at Unava through:

  • Dadi Amma Ka Chilla Mubarak: A symbolic shrine or retreat spot within Mira Datar Dargah, commemorating her 40-day spiritual seclusion (chilla). It represents her barakah's presence.

  • Dadi Amma Ki Chakki: A sacred flourmill where devotees touch or circumambulate (7 or 11 times) to dispel negativity. Legends say it "grinds away" evil spirits, black magic, and afflictions, granting health and prosperity.

The "Dadi Amma Dargah" often refers to these elements in Unava, as all her divine power converged there post-martyrdoms. Established in the mid-15th century, it grew with Mira Datar's fame. The chakki, possibly a relic from her life, symbolizes sustenance and purification.

Significance: As a jalali-jamali (majestic-beautiful) force, Dadi Amma aids in roohani ilaj (spiritual treatment) for possession, mental health, and curses. The site welcomes all faiths, blending tradition with modern "Dava-Dua" (medicine-prayer) programs.

Here are glimpses of Dadi Amma Ki Chakki and devotees at Mira Datar Dargah, capturing the sacred atmosphere:

Miracles, Testimonials, and Devotee Experiences

Dadi Amma's karamat include instant healings:

  • Historical Miracle: Milk provision, foundational to her legacy.

  • Modern Accounts: Devotees report relief from chronic issues.

Testimonials (from online shares and accounts):

  • Healing from Possession: "My daughter was possessed for years, screaming at night. At Dadi Amma Ki Chakki, we did 11 rounds; she calmed instantly. Now she's free—barakah of Dadi Amma!" – Gujarat family.

  • Black Magic Removal: "Business ruined by kala jadu. Touched the chakki, prayed to Allah via Dadi Amma; prosperity returned within months. All praise to the Divine!" – Rajasthan devotee.

  • Mental Peace: "Depression overwhelmed me. Inhaling loban at her chilla brought sukun. Dadi Amma's maternal love healed my soul." – International pilgrim.

  • Family Harmony: "Infertility cursed us. Offered chadar at mazar, circumambulated chakki; blessed with a child. Her power is zinda!" – Ahmedabad couple.

These reflect syncretism and faith-medicine integration.

Relation with Mira Datar Dargah

Dadi Amma's shrine is an extension of Mira Datar's—familial (foster mother), spatial (chilla/chakki within complex), and functional (shared healing powers). Pilgrims visit both: Mira Datar for gifts (datar means giver), Dadi Amma for maternal protection. During Urs, rituals honor her alongside family.

Her power complements Mira Datar's: He as shaheed (martyr), she as nourisher. Together with Mamu Saheb and Jannati Maa, they form a spiritual quartet, their barakah unified at Unava for over 500 years.

In Sufi tradition, Dadi Amma reminds that saints are conduits to Allah. Approach with pure niyyah (intention), direct duas to Him, and avoid shirk. Consult scholars for alignment with tawhid. May Allah grant shifa through these blessed souls! 🤲
